Manhattan Beach, CA

In the fall of 2009, I was approached by the Vukets family (client's of my father's architectural firm) to create two custom pieces for their insane home in Manhattan Beach, California.  There were two specific walls that they wanted pieces for, so the size and shape of each piece was dictated quite easily.

Fall

acrylic on canvas
48"w x 60"h

This piece was created for the large two storey foyer leading into the main section of the house.  The Vukets were very specific about the colour palette they wanted to use--warm earth tones encompassing golds, copper and emerald green.  Their eldest daughter Christy, was soon to graduate from interior design school in Toronto, so she kind of led the way directionally.  Once we discussed the colours they loved, I created a small canvas showing the colours I anticipated using on the project.  Once that palette was agreed upon, I set to work on creating the first piece, Fall.

Petal Storm
2009
acrylic on canvas
60"w x 36"h

The second piece was to be created for above the king sized master bed in the master bedroom.  We used the same colour palette again, this time going with a series of circular swirls of varying sizes on a gradated background.  I have had many people comment that the piece looks like it is something astronomical in scope.  The circular shapes were great to work with and something new and challenging for me at the same time.

While neither piece uses my traditional colour palette, it was an amazing exercise in working with art "as design".  The Vukets were very happy with the results and once completed, my friends at Navis Pack and Ship crated the pieces and shipped them off to Manhattan Beach.  Overall, it was a thrilling project to work on.  Hopefully I'll be working with the Vukets again soon on some custom pieces for their new boathouse project in Muskoka, Ontario.
